Train Detection

Prices for surveillance video cameras or automotive backup cameras have decreased to the point that we can install cameras at the critical points of our hidden track. However, for signals and automation, other types of detection are needed.

• Current sensing transformers (CT coils), to detect when a train is in a block.
• Infrared (IR) detectors utilize an emitter and detector for spot detection. When the emitters IR beam is reflected by a train the detector activates. IR detectors are prefered over optical detectors as they work in varying light conditions.

An "Occupancy Detection Practice" practice is being developed for both these types of detection.

Block current detection satisfies the needs of signalling but automation requires additional detection.
RR-CirKits has provided a schematic that when slightly modified can utilize inexpensive off-the-shelf FC-51 infrared sensor modules. This allows the connection of the IR modules to RR-CirKits TC-64 I/O board.
